Adjunct faculty members are part-time instructors at the university who may teach Day Division, Graduate Division, Extended Programs Division, and/or Accelerated Programs Division courses. These individuals are practitioners in the workplace who bring a wealth of background and real-world experience to the classroom. Appointed each semester on an as-needed basis, adjunct instructors teach a maximum of 14.0 credit hours per year during Semester I, Semester II, and Spring Term. Adjunct instructors may also teach additional hours above the 14.0 limit during Summer Session I and/or Summer Session II. Adjunct faculty members should have at least a master's degree and several years of teaching and/or work experience. Each dean or department chairperson hires her/his own adjuncts, subject to the Provost's approval.
Associate adjunct faculty members typically are the most senior and experienced adjuncts within a school or department. They are paid at a higher level of compensation than adjunct instructors, and may teach 15.0 to 21.0 credit hours per year during Semester I, Semester II, and Spring Term. Associate adjuncts may also teach above the 21.0 hour limit during Summer Session I and/or Summer Session II. Associate adjuncts are eligible for university-sponsored benefits such as health insurance, the retirement program, etc. The master's degree or a terminal degree is required for employment in this category. Each dean or department chairperson hires her/his own associate adjuncts, subject to the Provost's approval.
Affiliate faculty members are part-time instructors who teach non-credit courses, workshops, seminars, etc., only through the Institute for Leadership and Professional Development on an as-needed basis. Affiliate faculty is a separate category from adjunct instructors or associate adjunct instructors. A bachelor's degree or higher is required for employment in this category.
