Plotting Your Degree Plan
(Accelerated Division Only)

It takes 124.0 credit hours to earn a baccalaureate degree (a bachelor's degree) at the University of Indianapolis. We are often asked how it is possible to complete an accelerated degree program in three years or less when it takes a full-time Day Division student four (or more!) years to finish. Let's draw a little chart:

ANNUAL TOTAL

54.0 credit hours

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? Accelerated students may take UP TO six (6.0) credit hours per session. The majority of accelerated classes are 3.0 credit hours each and meet one night per week for five weeks. This means that you may take a maximum of two courses each 5-week session, which would require two nights a week in class plus homework. The number of credit hours you decide to take will be dictated by the speed with which you are comfortable, available course offerings needed in your major, your ability to pay for the courses, etc.

CAN I REALLY FINISH IN THREE YEARS OR LESS? It takes 124.0 credit hours to earn a degree. You may complete up to 54.0 per calendar year in the accelerated division. You do the math! And this does not take into account any testing programs (see http://sal.uindy.edu/testing.php for more information) in which you may choose to participate or any portfolio credit for which you may be eligible for learning from your life and work experiences (see http://sal.uindy.edu/pla.php for more information).

WARNING: 54.0 credit hours in one calendar year represents a MAJOR commitment on your part. It can be done, but not many accelerated students will be able to complete this many hours in one calendar year, for various reasons. The majority of accelerated students take 9-12 credit hours per term. But even if you were to take just 12.0 credit hours per term, that would amount to 144.0 credits in four years (the traditional so-called "four-year" degree), far more than the 124.0 you need for a degree. That still means you could finish a degree as quickly as a traditional full-time Day Division student. You decide how rapidly to progress through your degree program in consultation with your academic advisor.

HOW MUCH IS TUITION? 2006-2007 tuition for first-time accelerated students is $320.00 per credit hour, guaranteed not to increase for five years from the date you begin taking classes. Therefore, 54.0 credit hours at $320.00 per credit hour is $17,280.00. If you take one 3.0 credit hour class each of the nine accelerated sessions, this would equal 27.0 credit hours at $320.00 per credit hour, or $8,640.00.

  • Do you have company reimbursement?
  • Do you qualify for financial aid?
  • Have you applied for financial aid?

These are all factors that will determine the number of courses you may be able to take, the frequency of these courses, and the amount of time it takes you to finish your degree. Financial aid is available to students who qualify.
