College Credit for Learning

There are several opportunities to earn college credit for learning that you have done in a setting outside the classroom.

  1. Workplace Training

    (a) Training or development workshops and programs accredited by the American Council of Education (ACE). The ACE Web site is http://www.acenet.edu, or you may e-mail them at: credit@ace.nche.edu. It is the student's responsibility to submit original transcripts and certificates to the School for Adult Learning. There is no charge for the transfer of ACE approved credits, but there may be a transcript fee charged by ACE.

    (b) The Board of Regents of the State University of New York (SUNY) also accredits non-college sponsored learning, or learning done in training programs sponsored by some professional organizations such as APICS, LOMA, the Peace Corps (just to name a few). Also see the PONSI Guide or visit: http://www.co.calstate.edu/CSUI/ponsi.html. There is no charge for transfer of these credits.

  2. National Testing Programs

You may obtain college credit by taking any of a number of national testing programs and achieving the minimum ACE score on the exam. The full list of tests, and what they count for at U of I, is available at: http://sal.uindy.edu/testlist.html. Three national testing programs include:

    (a) College Level Equivalency Program (CLEP).

    (b) Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Students (DANTES).

    (c) Excelsior College Exams (formerly Regents Exams).

Full information about these programs is available at: http://sal.uindy.edu/testing.html. The test fee/administrative fee at U of I for a CLEP test currently totals $58.00; the DANTES fee is $47.00. Excelsior College Exams range in price from $75.00 to $250.00.

  3. Self-Acquired Competency Portfolio

Adults who qualify (you must be 24 or older) may submit documentation of learning from experience in portfolio for credit.

    (a) The learning is the key, not the experience.

    (b) Your learning should be college level, corresponding to competencies in a course listed in the University Catalog; for example, leadership skills, management, knowledge of graphic design, etc.

    (c) The portfolio validates "how" and "why" you have learned something, not "what" you have learned.

Visit this Web site for more information: http://sal.uindy.edu/pla.html. The cost for Self-Acquired Competency is $98.00 per requested credit hour ($294.00 for a 3.0 credit hour portfolio request), effective with the Fall 2001 semester.
